5 Spitfires made their debut today in this their first ever game. The game started quite even with our young defense starting the season on fire with several tackles on or behind the line of scrimmage. The Spitfires started to move the ball but the RedStorm had a bit too much speed and power for the young players and went into a strong 4 score lead just before half time.
The Blues reset at half time and we’re challenged by the coaches to get 1 first down before the end of the game, they started to grow in confidence as the game went on exceeded that goal with 2 first downs and were unlucky not to score.
The Blues flew out of the gates in this one with several great plays and racked up the yards with all offensive players using good hands and managed to get two early scores.
In the second half the Renegades came back well and put the pressure on, but great tackling and defensive play stopped them from getting over the top. After some good catches and effective runs the Spitfires tried to kill the clock but the Renegades used their size and experience and grabbed late scores. Down by 1 point in the final minutes the Renegades chose to go for the win with a 2 PT conversion which was successful giving them a narrow 14 - 13 lead. This of course meant the Spitfires had to go for it in the last minute but the Renegades held strong and scored a pick 6 to end the game.
Age, size and experience told in this battle of Spitfires but the Blue Squadron never gave up despite going behind early with a pick 6. A couple of further picks from the Red defense together with multiple TD passes own offense, the Red Squadron ran out comfortable winners 54-6. Funniest moment of the day was in this game when Sofia would go on a winding run and gain lots of yards, not least because she dodged a tackle from older brother Matteo....it'll take some time before she lets him forget that one I'm sure!
A tough first tournament for the Blue Squadron against strong opponents saw them drop to 0 - 3
